The nacimiento, or nativity scene depicting the birth of Jesus Christ, is at the center of the Mexican Christmas celebrations. In fact, in many communities and families, this scene is more central than the Christmas tree. Traditionally, nacimientos reference both the Gospels of Matthew and Luke and include the Holy Family, shepherds, the Three Wise Men (Los Tres Reyes), and an angel. In addition, Mexican nacimientos sometimes include Spanish moss, turkeys, women making tortillas, fish in a river, and elements of Mexican village life.
